Two people have died following a head-on collision between a VW Polo and a Toyota bakkie on the N2 highway between Dutywa and Butterworth on Monday.
Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson, Makhaya Komisa said the male and female who were in the Polo both died at the scene.
The man and woman travelling in the bakkie were both injured and taken a hospital.
"We are urging motorists to drive cautiously and reduce speed, as many roads in the province are wet due to recent heavy rains.
"Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha has expressed his condolences to the grieving families and wished the injured passenger a swift recovery."
A case of culpable homicide has been opened.
