Port Elizabeth police have arrested two suspects following Monday's violent protests in the city's Northern Areas.
Provincial Police Spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills, says the suspects aged 19 and 21 face charges of public violence and are expected to appear in the Gelvandale Magistrate's court on Tuesday.
Police are maintaining a strong presence and say that the situation is currently tense- there are no road closures but motorists are advised to proceed with caution in the Northern Areas. In Highfield road, near the mercantile hospital images on social media show that protesters are still burning tyres.
What was supposed to have been a peaceful protest over teacher shortages and other issues, quickly escalated into violent clashes between police and stone throwing residents
Mills says six police vehicles and one vehicle belonging to a community member were damaged.
She says there was an attempt to loot a shop in West End, but that police dispersed the crowd.
Earlier this morning, Algoa FM News encountered two people who were not part of the protest who were hit by rubber bullets - another person was reportedly hit in the face and unconfirmed reports of children also being wounded.
Police have denied use live ammunition to quell the protest.
