Two arrested for Gelvan Park murder

Cheslyn Philander, was charged with the murder of Kurtley Rossouw, pictured above.

Two men from Gqeberha who are alleged to have murdered a known gangster are expected to apply for bail in the city's magistrates court on Wednesday.

The state alleges that Meikhyl Wynford, 30, and Enzo Kingsley, 29, killed Cheslyn Philander in Habelgaarn Street in Gelvan Park on 23 December last year.

That night police responded to a complaint of trespassing at a house, where Philander was allegedly being assaulted by a group of people.

He sustained multiple stab wounds and other injuries all over his body.

He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said Wynford and Kingsley were arrested on 23 January and appeared in court on the same day.

Their case was remanded to Wednesday for a formal bail application.

At the time of his murder, Philander was out on bail of R20 000 for the murders of 14-year-old Kurtley Rossouw and Justin Malgas, 25, in a drive-by shooting incident in Bethelsdorp last June.

Rossouw was in the yard of his house when he was hit in the back by a stray bullet.

The teenager died on the way to hospital, while another man was also wounded in the incident.

Philander's co-accused in the two murders, Zane Geyers, abandoned his bid for bail when the pair first appeared in court on 28 June 2023.

Geyers will make a solo appearance in court today. (29 January 2024).

Naidu confirmed that Philander had flouted his bail conditions when he was killed.

Members of the provincial Organised Crime Investigation are also still investigating a separate case of murder and attempted murder that is seemingly linked to Philander's death.

The shooting incident happened at the entrance of the Livingstone Hospital in Gqeberha in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

At the time, Naidu said the driver of a white Nissan Sani, Godfrey Jaggers, 34, and three passengers were driving from Habelgaarn Street to Livingstone Hospital at 00:30 am.

Several shots were fired at the vehicle at the entrance of the hospital, fatally wounding Jaggers.

Two other victims, a male and a female (in their 20's) also sustained gunshot wounds, while the fourth managed to run away.
