Gqeberha police have confirmed that a truck was stoned and set alight on the Addo Road in Markman.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said residents from two informal settlements in the area were protesting on Wednesday night when they began stoning passing trucks.
A truck transporting oranges was setting alight.
Colonel Naidu said the driver was able to escape unharmed.
She said the driver of a manganese truck, which was also targeted, lost control while trying to evade stones in the road and crashed into the wall of a house.
While the reasons behind the protest remain unclear, it’s been rumoured that residents were waiting for the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Gary van Niekert to address them about electricity and water problems in the area.
