Trial date set for caregiver who allegedly assaulted elderly

A trial date has been set for an East London caregiver who is charged with the much-publicised attack on an elderly woman in an upmarket East London retirement home.

An East London Magistrate ordered that the case against 40-year-old Ncediswa Mkhencele be moved to the Regional Court for trial.

Algoa FM's Olwethu Xabanisa reports that she was arrested for allegedly assaulting an 84-year-old woman at the Berea Gardens Retirement Foundation.

Mkhencele who is currently out on warning was employed as a nurse at the retirement foundation.

The Foundation's Executive Director Michael Schulze says they have footage of the incident that allegedly took place in February.

Schultze added that Mkhencele was not fired, but when she was confronted about the incident, she resigned immediately.

Her last court appearance was on the 5th of June where she was remanded on warning.

The Magistrate moved the case to the Regional Court for the 26th of this month.
