A group of tourists visiting Gqeberha was held at gunpoint on Monday before being robbed of their personal belongings.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a group of 12 tourists disembarked from a small cruise ship and were guided on a tour through Belmont Terrace in Central.

She says shortly after 11 am, as they were making their way to the Fort Frederick monument, a suspect with a gun approached the tour guide.

Colonel Naidu says the tour guide tried to ward off the robber but during this time, three of his accomplices started stealing from the tourists.

She says they stole money, phones, a few cameras and other personal belongings.

The matter was reported to the Humewood police station.

Naidu says the tourists have already left the Bay and no arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, the MMC for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture in the Metro, Luxolo Namette says the city is imploring all residents to also report any illegal activity so as to make the city safer.

Namette told Algoa FM News that more security had been deployed in areas where tourists frequent.

He says the city condemns this kind of behaviour especially after Nelson Mandela Bay had suffered on the tourism front due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Just hours after the tourists were robbed another man was stabbed to death at St George's Park.
