Three in court for EL kidnapping

The Hawks in the Eastern Cape say three suspects appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the kidnapping of a nine-year-old girl in Buffalo Flats earlier this month.

The little girl, Emaan Ghumman, was reunited with her family after being released unharmed near the Inyibiba police station in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

She was allegedly abducted on February 3rd while returning home from Dreamland Primary School in Buffalo Flats. Reports indicate that two unidentified suspects forced her into a silver-grey Toyota Corolla and took her to an unknown location.

According to Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, a multi-disciplinary team played a crucial role in cracking the case.

The joint team included the Kidnapping Task Team of the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, East London Public Order Police, the Flying Squad, and Provincial Hostage Negotiators.

Mhlakuvana confirmed that the suspects were arrested on February 5th, following what he called a "meticulous investigation by the joint team."

"Due to the pressure exerted by the joint team, the victim was released by the suspects in the early hours of Wednesday morning, unharmed near Inyibiba police station," Mhlakuvana added.

The suspects have been remanded in custody until February 19th for a formal bail application.

Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Obed Ngwenya, praised the team for their swift and coordinated response.

"I applaud the joint team for the sterling job in apprehending the suspects and bringing the minor home safely," Ngwenya said.

Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane welcomed the breakthrough, saying it has brought "immense relief and hope to the affected family, the community of Vergenoeg, and the people of the Eastern Cape."

"We commend the Hawks for their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to ensuring justice is served. The abduction of the Vergenoeg girl sent shockwaves throughout our province, and we are grateful for the progress made in this distressing case," said Premier Mabuyane.

Authorities say more arrests are imminent as investigations continue.
