Eastern Cape police established a task team to hunt down the gunmen who killed three female Post Office employees in the Flagstaff area on Monday.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said they were driving in Jaca Locality when their Ford Ranger bakkie came under fire.
He said it’s not yet known if anything was taken from the vehicle, but the gunmen remain at large.
SAPO said in a statement that the employees were Bongeka Nogoda, Luleka Mpambani, and Yamkela Zimase, who were employed as tellers at the Bizana Post Office.
"The employees were on their way from a Postbank / SASSA Pay Point to Flagstaff on Monday afternoon, 17 April 2023 when the incident took place," said SAPO spokesperson, Suzie Khumalo.
"The motive for the murders is not clear at this stage, however, the Security & Investigation Services of the SA Post Office is working closely with the SAPS investigating team. No arrests have yet been made."
Meanwhile, Nkohli said the Flagstaff Post Office was also robbed of an undisclosed amount of money on Tuesday.
“It is alleged that the three men entered the Post Office in Main Street, and held the employees at gunpoint. The suspects managed to steal an undisclosed amount of cash and employees' cell phones before fleeing the scene,” he said.
Police are urging anyone with information that could assist with their probe in the two cases to contact the investigating team at 082 301 7762.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene, said the “team of seasoned investigators will not rest until the perpetrators are arrested and behind bars.”
