Thousands of EC disaster victims still without permanent shelter

More than 5 700 Eastern Cape households affected by various disasters going back to 2021 have still not been assisted with any form of temporary shelter.

Now, the Minister of Human Settlements, Mmaloko Kubayi, has given errant contractors two months to provide emergency housing or their contracts would be terminated, and they would carry the costs.

The Minister said of the victims of disasters across the Eastern Cape between 2021 and 2023, 2 382 households were assisted with permanent houses.

She said 2 172 were provided temporary shelter, leaving 5 766 households still needing assistance.

The Minister met Local and District Municipalities in Nelson Mandela Bay this week to address the blockage in the process and to consolidate response interventions in the Eastern Cape.

EC to benefit from Disaster Declaration

"We are going to work around the clock to make sure that we turn the situation around. Having listened to the municipalities around this room, we are all in agreement that we owe our people speedy resolution of this situation," she said.

The Minister said she would be approaching National Treasury to assist with funding to speed up these interventions for the province.
