Third fatal head-on collision in EC brings death toll to 10

Accident scene on N2

Two people have been killed and three seriously injured in yet another head-on collision in the Eastern Cape.

The latest accident on Saturday happened on the N10 road in Nxuba (formerly Cradock) about 25 km from Cookhouse.

This is the third head-on collision on Eastern Cape roads in a space of 12 hours.

Provincial Traffic spokesperson Unathi Binqose says at 10 am a Renault Sedan with four occupants, two men and two women, collided with an Articulated truck with only a driver.

He says the driver of the Sedan and his male front-seat passenger died on impact.

The two female passengers of the car and the truck driver sustained serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.

This brings the death toll for Saturday to 10 following a gruesome accident on the M17 in Gqeberha and a head-on collision on the N2 near Butterworth claiming the lives of six and two people respectively.

It is alleged that fatigue and speeding contributed to the accidents.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, however, said there was a strong indication that alcohol was involved in the Gqeberha crash that happened on the road between Motherwell and Kwazakhele shortly after 1 am.

Cases of culpable homicide are under investigation and no names of the deceased have been released.
