Ten people gunned down near Mthatha overnight

Ten people have been shot dead in Tantseka Village in the Bityi Administrative Area as well as Qunu outside of Mthatha.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana says, seven of the 10 people who were gunned down on Wednesday evening are from Qunu Village while the other three are from Bityi.

He says the motive is still being investigated and members of the public are urged to come forward with any valuable information.

Kinana says at around 8 pm on Wednesday, unknown suspects entered a homestead in Tantseka location where they shot and killed a 62-year-old woman and her 13-year-old grandson.

He says they then proceed to a second house where they killed the first victim's 44-year-old daughter.

Brigadier Kinana says the second incident, unknown gunmen entered a rondavel in Qunu where they opened fire killing seven people.

He says four men and three women aged between 32 and 46 died on the scene.

Ten cases of murder are under investigation.

Brigadier Kinana says the investigation is at an early stage and the possibility of the two incidents being linked will be investigated.

In November, seven family members were shot dead while mourning the death of a relative, 62-year-old Novotile Mgxada, who was also gunned down by men who stormed their Tantseka village home.

At the time six people aged between 29 and 68 died on the scene, while the seventh victim succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Police Minister, Bheki Cele, had visited the homes promising to bring justice to the bereaved families and the investigation was taken over by the Provincial Organised Crime Unit.

Since then four suspects in the Bityi mass murder case have been arrested and are currently on trial.
