Nine suspects, mostly taxi owners from the Garden Route, have had their minibus taxis seized by police following a raid earlier this week.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie says the suspects, aged between 30 and 57, are accused of fraudulently obtaining operating licences and roadworthy certificates from various testing stations without physically attending.
Lieutenant ColonelPojie says the accused face seven charges related to, but not limited to the Contravention of the Road Traffic Act, Fraud, Corruption And Contravention of the National Land Transportation Act (NTLA).
The seven taxi owners and two individuals from Mossel Bay appeared briefly in the local Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where they were granted bail of R1 500 each.
The accused were warned to appear in the same court on the 27th of January next year, pending further investigation.
