Nelson Mandela Bay police have shot and killed a suspect and wounded three more following a shootout in Kwazakhele on Thursday.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu said members of the New Brighton Crime Prevention Unit were on patrol in Mbilini Road late in the afternoon when they spotted a grey Hyundai i20 that was reported stolen in Kwadwesi.
She said as the SAPS members made a U-turn after spotting the suspects allegedly robbing a person in the street before driving off with the police following closely.
Naidu said when the vehicle turned into Stofile Street, police attempted to stop it, but the car sped off and shots were also fired at the police.

She said police returned fire, and the driver of the car lost control and went off the road.
“Three suspects sustained gunshot wounds and one was fatally wounded
“Three firearms, five cell phones and the stolen vehicle were recovered. Police are busy probing their possible involvement in other crimes in the metro,” Naidu said.
She said the three injured suspects are expected to appear in the New Brighton magistrate court soon.
NMB District Commissioner, Major-General Vuyisile Ncata, commended the members for their action, noting that the recovery of the firearms and the seizure of the stolen vehicle highlights the gravity of the threat posed by criminals.
“It's evident that these suspects who were armed, posed a significant danger to our community,” he added.
