Members of a SAPS team investigating the murders of five people in Gqeberha, fatally wounded a suspect wanted in connection with Tuesday night's multiple shooting.
Police spokesperson, Warrant-Officer Majola Nkohli, said members of the multi-disciplinary team went to a house in Tsewu Street in New Brighton just before noon on Wednesday.
He said it is alleged that when the members “tactically” entered the house, a man who was in possession of a firearm was about to shoot, when police opened fire.
Nkohli said the man sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body and died on the scene.
He said police recovered a Glock pistol and ammunition.
An inquest docket has been opened for further investigation.
Earlier, Nkholi said the mass shooting occurred in the Chris Hani informal settlement at around 9.30 pm on Tuesday night.
He said New Brighton police found the bodies of the men with multiple gunshot wounds inside a shack.
Nkohli said that the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.
The names of the five deceased will be released when the formal identification process is concluded.
