Gqeberha police have arrested a 42-year-old man after an attempted robbery of a sports bar in Newton Park on Wednesday morning.
This followed after the manager of a sports bar in Cape Road was busy opening up the premises at about 08:00.
Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said three armed male suspects then approached and ordered the manager to unlock the establishment.
“He then struggled and fought with the suspects and a 51-year-old passerby came running to help the manager”, Captain Beetge said in a statement.
“One of the suspects then shot at the 51-year-old male and wounded him in his foot.”
He said all three suspects fled the scene and in the process they dropped a replica firearm which was later picked up by police.
“The victim chased the suspects with his own vehicle, and bumped into one of them in a tyre service station at Cape Road.
“Moments later the SAPS Mount Road Task Team arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect who was in possession of an unlicensed 9mm firearm and ammunition.
“Both the unlicensed firearm and a replica firearm were confiscated by police,” Captain Beetge added.
He said the firearms would be sent for further forensic and ballistic analysis.
The suspect will appear at the Gqeberha Magistrates Court soon on charges of armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
