Sundays River canal to undergo much needed rehabilitation

Supplied

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is calling on residents to use water sparingly during the period that the Sundays River canal will be shut down for maintenance work.

The City's water supply is expected to be reduced and constrained due to the canal's closure from Monday until the 4th of July.

The canal's closure follows an incident in 2017 when a section collapsed and a temporary structure was subsequently erected but is now also in danger of collapse.

The acting executive director for infrastructure and engineering, Joseph Tsatsire, said work had been done to build a canal on the side of the collapsed section.

NMB mayor Gary van Niekerk also added that daily water will be reduced from 210 mega litres to 70 mega litres for the duration of the rehabilitation work.

"Although mitigation measures have been put in place it is possible that some areas might be affected by low pressure and water outages, in such instances water tanker services have been secured and the positions will be communicated periodically by ward councillors and through radio and our social media platforms."

Areas that will be vulnerable during the rehabilitation period are:

Motherwell / Wells Estate / Bluewater Bay

Parts of Chatty

Kariega and Despatch

Bloemandal

Chatty

Bethelsdorp

Despatch/Reservoir Hills.

NMB Senior Director Barry Martin said despite the recent heavy rains, NMB’s largest water supply, Impofu Dam remained at a low 42% resulting in the water tariffs still in place.
