Strong police presence in PE's Northern Areas amid education protest

Protests over teacher shortages at schools in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas are expected to escalate today.

Taxi associations have been roped in by angry parents to bring the Northern Areas to a standstill in a bid to press home demands around a range of issues affecting schools.

According to a statement over the weekend the plan is to blockade key routes to prevent people from leaving or entering the Northern Areas.

Speaking to Algoa FM News on Sunday, Ronnie Mathys, the chairperson of the Northern Areas Education Forum, said this decision was taken at a meeting of parents on Friday.

Schools in the Northern Areas were closed last week as part of the ongoing protests about teachers shortages, the lack appointments as well as budget matters, amongst other issues.

Mathys says another meeting will be held on Tuesday with education authorities on these matters.

Meanwhile, Richard Draai, the Secretary of the Forum told Algoa FM News that there's a strong police presence in the area.

He says the police helicopter is also in the air.

Draai says they also had a very fruitful meeting late into the night with senior Education Department officials.

He says they will be providing feedback from that meeting to the school governing bodies at Arcardia High School at six o'clock on Monday evening

Draai says given the positive outcome of Sunday's's meeting they will be assessing their call for a daylong protest.

A statement is expected to be issued later.
