Police in Gqeberha have arrested two suspects and seized suspected stolen tyres worth an estimated R3 million.
Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said the arrests and seizures were made on Tuesday in two separate police operations.
She said in the one incident members of Algoa Park and the Gqeberha Flying Squad were doing observation duties when they noticed two men off-loading tyres from a truck in Patience Street in Sidwell.
Janse Van Rensburg said they pounced and arrested the men, aged 51 and 53, and seized 193 brand-new truck tyres as well as a magazine with live rounds of ammunition.
“The truck was also confiscated for further investigation,” she said.
In a separate incident, members of the Public Order Policing received information that suspected stolen tyres were stored at an abandoned building in Govan Mbeki Avenue, Central.
The information was followed up and a total of 196 brand-new tyres were seized but no arrests were made.
“Further investigation revealed that the tyres worth an estimated R3 million belonged to a local tyre manufacturing company,” Janse Van Rensburg said.
The two suspects will appear in the New Brighton Magistrate Court this week for being in possession of suspected stolen property.
