Gqeberha police have confirmed that a stolen radioactive canister was safely recovered at a scrap yard dealer in North End on Monday morning.
The sealed container containing a radioactive isotope called Iridium 192 was stolen from a vehicle belonging to a welding business from KwaZulu-Natal in Sydenham on Friday.
Isotope is used by the industry to do X-ray welding inspections.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge said the scrap yard dealer contacted the owners via the numbers provided on a flyer.
According to the dealer, a man attempted to sell the item to them.
He ran away when the dealer started questioning him.
"The canister was fetched by its owners at the scrap yard.
"According to the owners, it did not seem to have been tampered with," said Beetge.
No arrests have been made.
Police are appealing to anyone with information that would assist in finding the suspects involved to contact SAPS Mount Road Detectives, Detective Constable Micaela Swart on 069 358 9965.
