State withdraws charges against Plett handyman

The case against a 34-year-old handyman accused of sexually assaulting a young boy at a popular Plettenberg Bay preschool was withdrawn on Wednesday.

During a brief appearance in the local magistrate's court the man, who was arrested on June 8 this year after claims surfaced that he allegedly sexually assaulted a six-year-old in the school's bathroom, was informed by state prosecutor Henriette Breedt that a decision had been made to withdraw the case as there was no chance of a successful prosecution.

In the meantime the man will however have to remain behind bars for now after the Department of Correctional Services revoked his parole, which would have expired in 2018, after his arrest.

He was out on parole at the time of the alleged incident and had two previous convictions including assault and attempted murder.

He will now have to approach the parole board and re-apply.
