Severe weather conditions in East London resulted in six flights being cancelled at the King Phalo Airport on Wednesday.
A spokesperson for Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) Ernest Mulibana says, furthermore, two other flights had to be delayed.
He says flight procedures are currently undergoing mandatory periodic reviews as safety measures, therefore under certain weather conditions, aircraft may not be able to procedurally commence approach and landing, especially if there is reduced visibility.
King Phalo Airport has two runways that could not be used until weather conditions improved.
ACSA's Mulibana says prevalent high winds in the area further necessitated increased tactical safety parameters to be instituted to ensure optimal safe flight operations.
He says weather conditions have improved and normal operations resumed.
ACSA says inclement weather conditions are expected for the rest of the week and passengers are encouraged to continuously check their flight information updates on the ACSA App or directly with the airlines.
