Six people have died and seven others sustained injuries in a crash involving a bakkie and a minibus taxi on the R61 near Corana Village just outside Mthatha on Saturday morning.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said it is alleged that the bakkie, with five passengers on-board, was en route to a traditional ceremony at a nearby village when it crashed into the back of a stationary minibus taxi that was loading a passenger.
Binqose said the bakkie then overturned.
“All five men [who were] at the back of the bakkie died on the scene, while one male passenger from the taxi also died,” said Binqose.
The injured, including the driver of the bakkie were rushed to hospital with injuries ranging from serious to minor, he said.
The taxi driver escaped unharmed.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened.
