A Chinese national who was shopping at China Town in Beacon Bay on Thursday shot and killed two suspects who tried to rob a store shortly after noon.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the two unknown men entered the shop at approximately 12.28 when one suspect grabbed the assistant behind the counter.
She says another shop owner who saw what was happening, shouted for security to assist who subsequently locked the gates.
Colonel Naidu says as the suspects tried to climb over the fence, one fired a shot into the air, before pointing his gun at a bystander.
She says a shopper who witnessed the shooting took out his licensed firearm and shot and killed both.
Police recovered a gas pistol and a 7.65 pistol at the crime scene.
A case of attempted murder, an inquest and attempted business robbery charges were opened for further investigation.
