Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has announced the suspension of seven officials from the City's Electricity & Energy Directorate.
In a brief statement on Tuesday, Mayoral Committee Member for Electricity and Energy, Lance Grootboom, said the precautionary suspensions followed a preliminary investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption.
He said the investigation emanated from the recent explosion of an electricity substation at the Coega IDZ.
Grootboom said the initial probe by internal audit has now been handed over to the Hawks and the SIU for further investigation
Bay mayor, Retief Odendaal, says the municipality is hoping to see swift progress in the matter.
"We believe that we are in the brink of uncovering one of the biggest corruption networks in the administration to date which would've potentially syphoned millions of rands from city coffers over the last couple of years. "
