Security guards contracted to Eskom - granted bail

Two security guards who work for a company contracted to Eskom appeared in the East London Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for their alleged role in the theft of diesel from a power station.

Forty-year-old Sicelo Dunga and 37-year-old Abongile Nokulila were arrested at the Port Rex Power Station in the City while on duty on Monday.

It is alleged that they were paid to allow a vehicle onto the property where 5 800 litres of diesel worth over R145 000 was stolen.

The information came to light through an internal investigation supported by the Bidvest Protea Coin Investigation Team.

The two accused were granted bail of R500 each and were assisted by legal aid.

The General Manager of Security at Eskom, Advocate Karen Pillay says it is appalling that people trusted with guarding their infrastructure would commit such atrocity and these arrests are another significant step in their fight against crime within Eskom.

Earlier this month several suspects were arrested on suspicion of sabotage and theft of Eskom property.
