Seals wash ashore at Mossel Bay after heavy storms

Diaz Beach

NSRI

More than 30 young seals have been found washed up dead near Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay.

Val Marsh of the Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team, said other seal carcasses were also washing up on the coastline.

She said on Tuesday that the stormy weather that hit the Garden Route over the weekend had played a huge role in this.

Seal expert and marine biologist, Dr Greg Hofmeyr, told Algoa FM News that there will often be dead seals at the colony.

He says with rough seas they will be washed off the rocks and onto the mainland.

The Mossel Bay Municipality has removed the dead animals.
