Saps in Garden Route urge public to donate dogs

The South African Police Service has urged members of the public to donate suitable dogs to the South African Dog Unit.

K9 units, especially in the Garden Route have a shortage of dogs.

The Dog Unit in Mossel Bay is currently working with 10 dogs and need a patrol dog, while the Attaqua K9-unit needs donations of German and Belgian shepherd dogs.

The units use dogs that are donated by members of the public.

Dogs that fit the profile will be trained as patrol, explosives, protective species, and tracking and rescue dog.

Dog breeds like Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Cocker Spaniels, Labradors, bloodhounds and Jack Russells have a history of success at the units.

The dogs must be between the ages of nine months and two years and no cross breeds are accepted. The dog trainers work on an incentive basic and therefore dogs that love playing ball will thrive in the unit.
