The National Sea Rescue Institute has appealed to mariners along the coast of Gqeberha to be vigilant after a 31-year-old Indian sailor was reported missing at sea.
Gqeberha station commander, Justin Erasmus, says they received a report on Saturday from a container vessel about six nautical miles off Cape Recife that the incident happened between 5 pm and 6 pm.
He said a search of the vessel revealed no signs of the man, who was declared to be missing and suspected to have gone overboard.
Erasmus says maritime authorities were alerted and the motor vessel initiated a search while an all-ships alert was broadcast.
“At first light on Sunday morning, the NSRI Gqeberha rescue craft Rescue 6 Alpha joined an extensive search operation.
“Despite an extensive sea search, there remains no signs of the missing man.
“An all-ships alert continues to be broadcast by Telkom Maritime Radio Services,” said Erasmus.
