If you have R12 million lying around, you could become the proud owner of the country's oldest pub.
Pam Golding Properties said the historic Pig & Whistle Inn in Bathurst is on the market, and the sale includes all furniture, fittings, paintings, and a well-equipped commercial kitchen.
"Most of the existing staff came with the business from the previous owners 12 years ago, so are likely to stay on," says, Robyn Cloete, Pam Golding Properties agent in Bathurst.
The Pig & Whistle is the country's "oldest continuously licensed" pub dating back to 1832.
Cloete said for another R12.5 million, one could acquire an associated 380ha game and pineapple farm (Lushington Valley Reserve) in a separate transaction, while another property is available separately for another R5.45m.
Bathurst is also home to the the Big Pineapple - the world's tallest pineapple building.
According to the website of the Pig & Whistle, Bathurst was well situated geographically as a waypoint for wagon travellers, hosting high-profile guests like doctors and politicians.
First called the Bathurst Inn, the name was changed 100 years later, when soldiers from the Royal Air Force were stationed nearby.
They decided to rename the pub after their local pub in England, thus the Bathurst Inn became the Pig and Whistle.
