Public hearings on proposed name changes for several towns including Graaff-Reinet and Adendorp will be held from 26 to 29 February.
Other towns on the list include Nieu-Bethesda and Aberdeen.
“Amongst a list of applications to be discussed at the public hearings is the proposed name change of Graaff-Reinet to Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe and Adendorp to KwaMseki Bishop Limba,” the Committee said.
The ECPGNC said it had received applications for the proposed renaming, adding that the process was now at the stage of public hearings and advertisement of the proposed names for public comment where details of reasons for the proposed standardisation of each name will be presented.
“If there are any objections, the names are sent to the ECPGNC’s Objections Sub-committee for response.
The Committee said if there is consensus on the new name amongst all relevant stakeholders, it will make recommendations to the national South African Geographical Names Council.
The Council will “examines the processes followed in concluding that such a name should be standardised or accepted before the name is gazetted for public comments, acceptance, or rejection,” the Committee said.
