Twenty nine bags of abalone valued at more than R300 000 have been seized at the home of a prison warden opposite the North End Prison in Port Elizabeth.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans, says a 44 year-old correctional services officer on stress leave was arrested and is expected to appear in court on Friday.
Labans says the bust was the culmination of a two week-long investigation involving the Tactical Task Force, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the police.
The abalone weighed in the region of 350 kg. Two deep freezers were confiscated during Tuesday's operation.
