Power outage throws spanner in the works at Gqeberha court

Dr Bantu Noqekwa

A power outage in the area of New Brighton in Gqeberha led to the interference with the administration of justice at the Magistrates Court on Friday.

Without electricity, the court's electronic recording systems were unable to function, which meant that many cases had to be postponed.

Those who attended court, including accused persons out on bail and members of the public, had to wait outside the building until it was their turn to appear.

One of the cases remanded was the formal bail application of the ex-wife of slain Zwide doctor, Bantu Noqekwa, who was shot to death in his surgery in a brazen attack in May.

Ethel Noqekwa, and two co-accused, Siyabulela Gcayiya, and Andile Jongi have all been charged with the doctor's murder.

Gcayiya and Jongi have enlisted the services of Legal Aid South Africa.

All of the accused remain in custody and will appear in court again on Tuesday.
