The Hawks said a police officer will appear in court in East London on Friday for the theft of money from the offices of the SAPS Crime Intelligence Unit in the city.
Provincial spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Avele Fumba, said the breakthrough came five days after the incident was reported on 10 January.
He said the arrest was a result of a "meticulous" investigation conducted by the Hawks, showcasing their commitment to ensuring swift justice.
Fumba said the arrest of the police officer also showed that the Hawks were prepared to uphold the law without fear or favour, ensuring that accountability is maintained across all sectors, including within our ranks.
The Hawks did not provide any further information, but the Daily Dispatch, quoting from a leaked internal SAPS document, said an amount of R1.3 million was taken in the incident on Friday.
The report said officials had just completed counting the money.
In a statement on Thursday, the Democratic Alliance said Crime Intelligence offices carry substantial sums of money used to pay informers and security was meant to be of the upmost level.
“For more than 15 years, since the departure of Jackie Selebi, our crime intelligence has faced escalating crises – from fraud and corruption; protracted, expensive disciplinary hearings; to media campaigns to misinform South Africans on the true state,” said DA MP, Lisa Schickerling.
