Police use water cannon at Walmer Township protest

Port Elizabeth police are using water cannon to extinguish burning tyres and debris placed on Heugh Road by protestors from Walmer Township on Wednesday morning.

Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the situation is calm at the moment but that township residents are still in the area.

She says Heugh Road remains closed to traffic between 8th avenue and 11th avenue and that protestors are also reported to have burnt tyres in Victoria Drive and on a section of Villiers Road.

Meanwhile AlgoaFM news has received reports this morning of a flare-up of yesterday's protest action at Ugie in the North Eastern Cape.

Protesters were burning tyres and throwing stones at passing cars a short while ago.

Motorists are advised to avoid the  Ugie/Maclear Road and the Ugie/Mthatha road until further notice.

Algoa Fm news also received reports of a protest brewing in Kenton on Sea. Traffic is being diverted.

It is not clear at this point what the protestors are unhappy about
