Plett teacher back in court for alleged sexual assault of pupil

A 42-year-old Plettenberg Bay teacher who allegedly sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy at his school will know on Friday whether or not he will be granted bail.

The teacher, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, began his application for bail in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

He was arrested on the 22nd of June after the Grade 2 learner's guardian reported two alleged incidents of sexual assault - in May of this year -  to police.

During his bail application, the accused vehemently denied that he had sexually assaulted the child and indicated that he would plead not guilty when given the opportunity.

State prosecutor Henriette Breedt, however, opposed bail and said the community had been plagued by sexual crimes against children in recent months and that denying bail would send out a message that these crimes were viewed in a very serious light.
