Plea negations underway in Desiree Baartman trial

Plea negotiations are underway between the State and the defence in the Desiree Baartman murder trial.

Baartman's ex-husband, 59-year-old Johnny, has been charged with her premeditated murder and one count of defeating the ends of justice.

Baartman allegedly killed Desiree at the couple's Bethelsdorp home in June last year and disposed of her body.

Desiree's body was found in a 3.7m stormwater drain near the Jagtersvlakte area on Stanford Road.

When the case resumed on Monday, State Advocate Rafick Ahmed asked for a postponement for plea negotiations to be finalised.

Baartman's attorney, Kuban Chetty did not object to the request.

It is understood that Baartman will plead guilty to the crime.

He has been in custody since his arrest, after abandoning his bail.

He will appear in court again on Friday.

Murder

Baartman reported Desiree missing at the Bethelsdorp police but kept mum while her family agonised over her disappearance.

Mere hours after a vigil was held for her safe return, Baartman reportedly led police to the stormwater drain where he allegedly tossed the body of the mother of his two children.

At the time he attempted suicide by slashing his wrists and spent some time in the hospital section at St Albans prison.
