Permanent repairs for power outage in Gqeberha could take three months


Residents of thirteen suburbs in Nelson Mandela Bay are still affected by widespread power outages which started on Friday.

According to the municipality, four 132 kV high voltage transmission towers collapsed on the Western side of the city.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Gary van Niekerk, said technicians have been on-site to start working on temporary repairs, but his could take up to two weeks to complete.

Once the temporary repairs are complete, power supply will be restored, and permanent repairs will commence.

“These permanent repairs may take up to three months to complete,” van Niekerk added.

Van Niekerk has meanwhile confirmed that he would be briefing the press to update the public on the recent electricity outages, at 13:00 on Saturday.

The briefing will outline the causes of the incident, outline what is being done to restore power supply including what further mitigation measures will be put in place to fast-track repairs and restoration of power supply to affected areas.
