PE's Northern Areas calm following education protests

Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makupula, is expected to meet school principals in Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday to address the issues that led to a violent protest in the Metro on Monday.

Several people were injured in clashes between police and residents when parents, angered by the lack of teachers in schools, called for a total shutdown of Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas.

What was meant to be a peaceful protest turned violent when some residents, particularly in the Helenvale area, blocked roads and stoned passing cars and police vehicles.

Police retaliated with rubber bullets, stun grenades and teargas.

Two people arrested on charges of public violence are due to appear in court on Tuesday.

Last night, Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor, Danny Jordaan, attended a meeting where feedback was meant to be given to parents by the Northern Areas Education Forum.

The Forum said it had a fruitful meeting with the Education superintendent-general, Ray Tywakadi on Sunday night, where several undertaking were made to address the parents concerns.
