Patensie taxi driver sentenced for overloading

A Patensie taxi driver who was arrested for cramming 50 school children into his vehicle, has been fined R5 000 or six months in jail.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, says Hyron Bruintjies, was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to a charge of overloading.

Bruintjies was arrested last week by a policeman who said he had witnessed his Toyota Qantum being driven recklessly and at high speed.

When he pulled Bruintjies over he found that there were 50 school children, aged between six and 12, into his vehicle.

However, the state had withdrawn the charge of reckless and negligent driving against him.
