The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape has called on the provincial government to develop a comprehensive safety plan to "rescue the province from its downward spiral of violent crime."

Newly-elected Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Gary van Niekerk said the performance of every single councillor – including himself – will constantly be evaluated so as to effectively address the crises affecting the metro. Van Niekerk mentioned the municipality’s water woes, electricity challenges and a city that is stalked by a climbing crime rate.

Police in Gqeberha have launched a manhunt for three suspects who assaulted and disarmed an Atlas security officer before going on a violent crime spree.

An atlas security officer was rushed to hospital last night after sustaining multiple head wounds during an attack in Central in Gqeberha. A spokesperson for Atlas Ryan Morris says their officer was patrolling Western Road on Monday night when he came across three suspects assaulting someone on the side of the road.

Confusion reigned on Monday at the City Hall in Gqeberha where the newly-elected mayor, the Northern Alliance’s Gary van Niekerk was expected to announce his mayoral committee.

Police in Gqeberha are investigating a Cash-in-transit robbery that took place outside a liquor store on Cape Road on Friday. Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says at about half past two in the afternoon a private security company was collecting money from the shop situated in Newton Park.

A 62-year-old woman from Timothy Valley in Gqeberha's Northern Areas has died after her house burnt to the ground. Gladys Palmer, affectionately known in the community as Ouma, is believed to have hidden underneath her mattress to escape the flames in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Five people were killed in yet another head-on collission in the Eastern Cape this weekend. A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqose says the latest accident happened shortly before midnight on the R56 between Maclear and Ugie.

Five people have been killed following a head-on collission between a Hyundai mini truck and Isuzu Bakkie. The accident happened yesterday afternoon on the R75 between Kariega and Graaff Reinet.
