Omotoso trial, Cheryl Zondi concludes her testimony

Cheryl Zondi

One of the state's key witnesses in the protracted rape and human trafficking trial of Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso concluded her cross-examination in the Gqeberha High Court.

Cheryl Zondi told the court that Omotoso sexually assaulted her on numerous occasions between 2010 and 2013.

Defense attorney Peter Daubermann questioned Zondi on why she failed to mention the exact extent of the alleged offenses in two statements she had given the police.

He was referring to Zondi's testimony that Omotoso had "slightly penetrated" her during the alleged sexual encounters.

Daubermann put it to Zondi that she had adapted her version of the events.

Zondi denied this and said: "It definitely happened."

Concerning Zondi's evidence that the first sexual encounters had taken place at Omotoso's house in Durban in 2010, Daubermann said this was not possible.

He showed Zondi a lease agreement that shows that Omotoso only started to lease the property in February 2011.

Zondi cut all ties with Omotoso and the church in 2013, but they reunited two years later.

Daubermann asked her why she returned to the church in 2015, knowing that she might subject herself to further sexual assaults.

"You were out of his clutches, why go back," Daubermann enquired.

"I was out of his physical clutches, but I still had the fear in the back of my mind that something bad would happen to me or my mother.

"I missed singing in the choir and the bond I formed with the others who were like older sisters.

"I also needed closure, so I wanted to find out why he did those things to me. I was hoping that I would get an apology," Zondi replied.

Omotoso and his co-accused, Lusanda Sulani and Zukiswa Sitho face more than 90 charges, including rape, sexual assault, money laundering, and racketeering.

The trial will resume on Friday.
