Five alleged hijackers are expected to appear in court this week following their swift arrest in Gqeberha on Monday.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says a truck loaded with appliances was hijacked in Pickering Street shortly after 10 a.m., and details of the truck and the suspects' Toyota Quantum were circulated.
She says two Flying Squad members, who were off duty at the time, without hesitation, rushed to the area in their private vehicles.
Colonel Naidu says when the suspects realised they were being followed, the members split up and called for backup.
She says the vehicles were eventually cornered at the intersection of Circular Drive and Henry Botha Drive in Walmer.
When the truck stopped, two suspects jumped out and ran towards Charlo.
Colonel Naidu says during the unfolding drama shots were fired by the off-duty cops when the men in the Quantum tried to run them over.
She says the K9 Unit and a private security company assisted in arresting one suspect and a 9 mm pistol was recovered.
A total of five suspects were apprehended and the truck with all its contents was recovered.
The men aged between 26 and 41 will be charged with hijacking, possession of suspected stolen property, attempted murder, kidnapping and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Acting District Commissioner for Nelson Mandela Bay, Brigadier Ronald Koll applauded the bravery and selflessness of the officers as well as their colleagues and the security sector.
"The act of courage serves as a testament to the fact that police officers are never off duty.
"The actions of all those involved in the successful apprehension of the suspects exemplify the highest standards of professionalism," he added.
