Authorities are appealing to the public and visitors to the country to have extreme safety top of mind around the coast and inland waters.
The appeal from the National Sea Rescue Institute, Emergency Services, and municipal authorities comes as three local fishermen remain missing after being swept off rocks in separate incidents.
In an earlier statement, Wilderness station commander, Mike Vonk said three men fishing at George were washed after being swept off the rocks by a wave on Saturday.
One man managed to make it to shore, while two other men remained missing despite an extensive search.
On Sunday, Vonk said another fisherman was reported to be missing at Hansmoeskraal, near Pacaltsdorp.
Two other tragic drownings were also reported at Sedgefield Lagoon, while a teenager was rescued from the surf at Victoria Bay over the weekend
NSRI national spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said their “thoughts are with those affected by these tragic events this weekend”.
