Northern Areas uprising - remembered

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the Northern Areas Uprising Committee on Thursday commemorated the 25th anniversary of the uprisings which led to the deaths of nearly sixty people.

The events included a wreath-laying ceremony when families of the victims and the Deputy Mayor, Buks Ndoni, laid wreaths at the graves of those who died in the uprising.

Ndoni said the day was to honour the heroes and heroines of the struggle.

Fifty-nine people were killed when a peaceful protest over rent increases and evictions spiraled into clashes with apartheid-era police.

The event was closed with a candlelight ceremony where candles were lit by family members in honour of their departed loved ones.
