Nelson Mandela University is in shock after a student was killed by a fellow student during an incident on campus early on Saturday morning.
NMU spokesperson, Zandile Mbabela, said they will cooperate with the relevant law enforcement agency throughout this process. The University has also appealed for calm as the police investigation “runs its course”.
The University has also extended its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased student.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg identified the deceased as Mziwenene Tinza, who died after being stabbed in the chest.
She said the suspect fled the student accommodation in University Way but later handed himself over to the police.
Janse Van Rensburg said he will appear in court on Tuesday on a charge of murder.
Meanwhile, NMU said it would also be providing counselling and other psychosocial support mechanisms for students and staff affected by this tragedy.
“Affected students are encouraged to approach Emthonjeni Student Wellness, while staff can access support through the available staff wellness interventions,” Mbabela said.
