NMMU Vice Chancellor to raise funds on Mount Fuji

NMMU Vice Chancellor Derrick Swartz is preparing for a noble quest to the summit of mount Fuji in Japan to raise funds for bursaries for needy students.

The mountaineering professor will embark on the 3.7 kilometre high climb on the 7th of August as part of a trip in which he'll also speak at  a conference in Hiroshima commemorating the anniversary of the World War II atomic bombings.

Speaking at the announcement of the initiative on Friday,  Professor Swartz said he had been the recipient of a bursary when he studied - and that it was now his turn to give back to communities battling to send 1st generation youngsters to university.

A number of Corporates have already made close on 240-thousand rands worth of pledges towards the climb which is nearly halfway to the target of 550-thousand rand.
