The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has appointed 14 new Metro Police officers to beef up their current workforce.
The new recruits have undergone extensive training in crime prevention, traffic policing, and bylaw enforcement.
Metro Police Deputy Commissioner Advocate Andrew Moses officially welcomed the recruits to the team by handing them their badges.
Moses said the metro is faced with a high violent crime rate, incidents of vandalism of infrastructure, and general disregard for Municipal bylaws.
“We are proud of these members for their commitment to go through the intensive training until the end.
“As you assume this duty you need to understand that you are joining a team of officers that have pledged and committed to create a safe City. We expect nothing less from you," he said.
The officers have already been deployed to different units within the Metro Police operations.
“The number might not be huge, but if properly utilised they will make a huge difference in our quest to create a safe City, working with other law enforcement agencies,” Moses added.
One of the newly appointed Metro Police officers, Constable Buhle Tembeni said she was honoured and humbled to be part of a police team that is serving a Municipality named after a great icon.
“Being employed in a Municipality named after Tata Mandela is in itself a clear call for me to serve with humility and courage," she said.
