NMB dam levels dire - reservoirs cannot meet demand

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is calling on residents to urgently reduce consumption as reservoirs struggle to meet high demand.

Mayor Retief Odendaal, says the main supply dams were currently at 14.90% of combined capacity.

He says the low-dam levels caused a strain on the system, leading to a supply deficit to the Nooitgedacht Water Treatment Works.

Odendaal says this has had a knock-on effect on the Grassridge and Olifantskop Reservoirs, with parts of Nelson Mandela Bay now experiencing reduced water flow.

Among the areas affected are Rosedale, Fairbridge Heights, Strelitzia Park, and Vanes Estate in Kariega.

Even more alarming were photographs taken of the Impofu dam on the 6th of January showing the dam at its lowest level (7.27%) since it was constructed in 1983.

The dam levels in the Metro are currently standing at 14.90% with the usable storage at 9.56%.
