NCC to probe overbooking by FlySafair

The National Consumer Commission says it has initiated an investigation into overbooking by FlySafair.

This followed a social media storm after a passenger complained about a flight and the airline acknowledged that overbooking was a common practice to keep prices down.

The NCC said it has begun communicating with FlySafair and required relevant information to kick-start the investigation.

“The NCC will prioritise this investigation given the nature of the allegations.  Consumers affected by this practice are urged to come forward and provide information that could assist the investigation,” said acting commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu.

The NCC is also calling on consumers affected by “this practice” to come forward and provide information that could assist the investigation.

According to media reports a disgruntled passenger took to X to complain after arriving at the airport, and, despite paying for the flight, was told there were no seats available.

FlySafair also reportedly said passengers don’t always arrive for their flights and without overbooking, the airline would have more empty seats leading to higher fares to cover the empty seats.
