While the family of Desiree Baartman, 57, is still battling to come to terms with her murder, an autopsy is yet to reveal her exact cause of death.
Desiree's ex-husband, Johnny Baartman, 59, is accused of her murder and defeating the ends of justice.
Baartman, a former school teacher, has had previous run-ins with the law.
His legal representative, Qhamani Sinefu of Kuban Chetty Attorneys, told the court that he has previously been convicted on a charge of drinking and driving.
In 2014, he was acquitted after standing trial when a high school pupil accused him of rape.
After his acquittal, Baartman brought an R8 million civil suit against his accuser and the Eastern Cape education department. An out-of-court settlement was reached.
Now, back in the dock for Desiree's murder, Baartman said he wants to place all of the facts about the case on record.
The court is yet to determine when he will be allowed to do so.
At some point after the murder, Baartman cleaned the crime scene to rid it of evidence, as alleged by the state.
A source close to the investigation told Algoa FM that traces of blood were found inside the couple's home during a forensic investigation.
Baartman reported Desiree missing at the Bethelsdorp police station last Wednesday but kept mum while her family agonised over her disappearance.
Mere hours after a vigil was held for her safe return, Baartman reportedly led police to a stormwater drain next to Stanford Road near the Jagtersvlakte area, where he allegedly tossed the body of the mother of his two children.
Baartman has avoided eye contact with his visibly distraught children, and Desiree's family and friends during two prior court appearances.
He attempted suicide by slashing his wrists. Due to his suicidal tendencies, he will be sent to a district surgeon for evaluation.
The court requested that he be kept in custody at the hospital section of the St. Albans prison.
The Director of Public Prosecutions is expected to give further guidance on the case and Baartman will make another court appearance on 26 June.
